Our role

Educating and influencing, developing and improving

Our mission is to uphold information rights in the public interest, promoting openness by public bodies and data privacy for individuals. We achieve this in a number of different ways.

Educating and influencing

  • We provide guidance to organisations and individuals to help them understand their obligations and rights.
  • We run an enquiry service for individuals and organisations.
  • We speak to groups to raise awareness of the law and how it works.
  • We influence thinking on privacy and access issues.

Resolving problems

  • We resolve eligible complaints from people who think the Acts have been breached.

Enforcing

  • We take action against those who have broken the law.
  • We can prosecute some of those who commit offences under the legislation.
  • We maintain a public register of organisations holding personal information.

Developing and improving

  • We work efficiently and effectively, and we provide a good working environment for our people where ideas are listened to and personal and professional development are encouraged.

Our vision

Our vision clearly articulates the sort of organisation we want to be: "By 2012 we will be recognised by our stakeholders as the authoritative arbiter of information rights, delivering high-quality, relevant and timely outcomes, responsive and outward-looking in our approach, and with committed, high-performing staff – a model of good regulation and a great place to work and develop."
