Freedom of Information

Setting the pace and future policies

We are responsible for developing policies and the ICO’s approach to the Freedom of Information Act and Environmental Information Regulations.  Not only do we react to new developments, we proactively anticipate future challenges too.

Using a variety of methods and resources, we shape policies and ensure that they are applied consistently across all areas of the ICO. We interpret legislation clearly, establish points of principle, assess wider implications, test boundaries and decide how policy should be applied.

Much of our work is linked to casework and appeals. We also contribute to case review panels and handle appeals made to the Information Tribunal on behalf of the Commissioner. This involves completing documentation, attending trial hearings and ensuring decisions are communicated across the ICO.

The policy lines we develop affect all of our teams. We share new policies and information internally whilst our Good Practice Team communicates them externally.

Roles in freedom of information

Based in all ICO locations, we offer a variety of roles within freedom of information. As well as Case Officers, we have many specialists, managers and people in senior roles who make up our Good Practice and Enforcement, Policy and Complaints teams.
