Freedom of Information

At the centre of our world

We are the Freedom of Information Team, and we provide advice to public bodies and investigate complaints received under the Freedom of Information Act and Environmental Information Regulations. We resolve complaints informally wherever possible, although we will issue decision notices and facilitate enforcement action when necessary. A dynamic team offering real challenges, our work is twofold.

On the one hand we support the rights of individuals in the UK, investigating complaints from people who are unhappy with the way public authorities have handled their requests for information.

On the other hand we play a crucial role in helping public authorities to implement the relevant legislation and understand the difference between ‘need to know’ and ‘right to know’. We encourage public authorities to be more open and gain greater public trust, as well as recognising when protecting information would be in the public’s best interest.

We can offer you the opportunity to work on a diverse range of interesting and sometimes groundbreaking cases whilst influencing policy lines and gaining a true insight into the regulation of the law.

Roles in freedom of information casework

The Head of Freedom of Information Complaints leads the team in Wilmslow and is supported by the Freedom of Information Complaints Team Leader and a number of Officers and Senior Officers.
