Data Protection

A specialist source of expertise

We are the Casework and Advice Division, and our specialist knowledge is called upon when cases require more detailed investigation. Our understanding of the complexities and implications of the Data Protection Act and the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations enables us to assess compliance and provide advice to individuals and organisations about their rights and obligations.

Managing a range of cases, our work is far from run of the mill. When things go wrong in organisations, personal information can be exposed which can cause major problems for the individuals concerned. That is where we come in. Not only do we help to resolve issues, we educate organisations to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

Investigating cases relating to private businesses and public sector bodies, we initiate informal regulatory action to resolve complaints and refer cases to other ICO teams that are suitable for enforcement and audit. We also analyse casework trends to develop an understanding of topical issues and identify future developments.

What skills do we look for?

You should be a confident communicator with an eye for detail and a talent for analysing information and making well informed decisions. Our team is busy and fast-paced, so you must be able to strike the right balance between managing a high volume of cases and delivering consistently high standards of quality.

Roles in data protection casework and advice

We primarily recruit Casework Advice Officers to our Wilmslow based team that is led by several Casework and Advice Division Managers, and headed up by the Head of Data Protection Casework and Advice.
