Our main data protection policy function is based at the ICO head office in Wilmslow and has two teams: data protection practice and data protection development.
With new developments and advances in technology continually impacting on data protection, we develop policy lines across all sectors and ensure that everybody is updated on issues that may impact on privacy. We do this by writing guidance, advising organisations and briefing our Press Office and the media on new developments.
We are also responsible for making sure that all organisations that collect and use information about individuals know what the law requires of them and how they can follow good practice. As well as advice, we provide clear and practical guidance to help them get it right first time.
Working with colleagues in other parts of the office, we seek to ensure that individuals know their rights and understand how the law protects them. Dealing with matters that are often splashed across the media, our work is demanding - but we enjoy the challenge.
Led by an Assistant Commissioner, there are a variety of roles, from entry level to senior management, dealing with the public and private sector.
We proactively promote data protection compliance. This involves managing projects, developing guidance and instigating research to develop more effective ways of ensuring compliance. We also actively promote date protection aims and practice across businesses, government and parliamentarians.
We discharge the UK’s international data protection obligations and work with and share best practice with other data protection and privacy authorities.
Our work is very wide-ranging and involves writing codes of practice, liaising with a variety of organisations, providing parliamentary evidence and promoting good information handling. We strive to ensure that when organisations and government form new policies, systems and ways of working, protecting personal information is at the forefront of their minds and built in from the beginning.
Led by an Assistant Commissioner, there are roles in the team’s three areas of work: International, Projects and Promotion.
