Keeping track of who holds personal information

Most companies that hold and use personal information need to notify us. If they don’t, they may be committing a criminal offence. Businesses notify us by submitting a completed form along with a fee. As we process over 300,000 notifications and renewals each year, and fees in excess of £11.3 million, we are a very busy department.

We are responsible for handling all aspects of the notification process, issuing notification forms, maintaining the public register and letting businesses know when their renewal is coming up. We process amendments and renewals, and provide guidance on filling in the relevant forms. We answer a range of notification enquiries through our helpline service. And we also contact organisations that haven’t notified us under the Data Protection Act 1998, advising them of their legal obligations. We refer them to our Enforcement Team where necessary, for further action.

As the workload can be demanding, this team isn’t for the faint-hearted, especially when dealing with new challenges such as proposed changes to the notification fee.
